Disruptive Printing | Get Your Zine Printed
Zines use low res looking imagery, and are made up of cut and paste elements, using bold font choices and unusual layouts. They are a nod to the days when layouts were manual and printing was a more laborious and extravagant process.
You might ask yourself, what is a zine? And how is a zine different from a magazine? You, like many other people think that zine is short for magazine. In some cases that could be right, however, there are a few major differences between the two types of publications.
A zine (pronounced zeen) is short for Fanzine, which more often than not was an independently or self-published booklet, created by cutting and gluing text and images together onto a master sheet for photocopying, but it is also common to produce them by typing and formatting pages on a computer. The publication is usually folded and stapled.
Today with the invention of the incredible design software we can all use, creating a zine is comparatively easier. A Zine is brilliant when you want to stand out from the crowd by choosing to be different from everyone else. They make fantastic look books and portfolios or as publications for specific shared interests and hobbies. Zines are a great style of publication for indie magazines.
If you’re looking for something that appears disruptive, a zine is the publication style for you. They are rough and ready but in a deliberate way. Their style reflecting the days when underground publications were illicit so were quickly spun up, laboriously photocopied and dog eared from being shared. Today, they look less hand made but pack a real punch in their ability to look out of place enough to pique interest.
